Ruchira’s passion for reptiles started as early as primary school days and he has continued his work on reptiles ever since.
Currently he is an academic staff member at University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka and is reading for his PhD under
Professor Rick Shine at University of Sydney, working on the Australian freshwater crocodiles at Lake Argyle (Western Australia).
Ruchira is a member of several herpetological organizations including the IUCN/SSC Crocodile Specialists Group.
His passion has taken him herping in several parts of India, Sabah, Sarawak, Thailand, Singapore and the UK.
Ruchira is the author of 'Sri Lankawe Sarpayin' (The Snakes of Sri Lanka) and the creator of
www.srilankareptile.com
while him and his wife, Nilusha, are co-authoring a new field guide to the Sri Lankan Lizards which will be published
in 2009. Their general areas of interest are herpetology, wildlife conservation, behavioural ecology, and conservation biology.
